Seachtain na Gaeilge 1

In conjunction with Glór an Ghleanna, the club was able to host a number of events in the lead-up to St Patrick’s day as part of the confusingly named Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish language Week) – which actually lasts for around a fortnight!

First up on the list of events was the Bricfeasta Gaelach (Irish Breakfast). This was run in Hannahstown Hall alongside the underage training and aimed to provide breakfast and a bit of craic for the parents who were at a loose end while their children were training. This was well received by hungry parents and also by the thirstier ones, who availed of the seemingly infinite cups of tea and coffee.

The day continued up at the club where the Dianchúrsa Ghaeilge (Irish Language Course) attracted a good number of budding Gaeilgeoirí and willing students. The classes were held in a relaxed and enjoyable manner and the feedback was good from the students involved.

We concluded Saturday’s events with Scéalaíocht (Storytelling), a central aspect of Irish culture. Conall McCorry and Nuala McKeever directed proceedings and a large crowd of children were enthralled with their bilingual and interactive stories. Indeed, a makeshift tent provided much entertainment for the children and adults alike. To complete their day, the children were then treated to a party in the Halla Mór, which they seemed to thoroughly enjoy!

The following day the club held an Aifreann na Gaeilge (Irish language) mass in the Halla Mór, celebrated by An tAthair Dara. This was well attended and while some of the responses were quite muted to begin with, as confidence grew they became more audible, led ably by the young Gaelscoil pupils scattered throughout the congregation. Mass was then followed with the customary tea and sandwiches, ensuring everyone left well-fed and wearing a smile on their face.
