Scór na nÓg – Semi-Final (11/11/11)
Following the resurgence of Scór Sinsir earlier in the year, the club took an enthusiastic approach to Scór na nÓg. As well as competing in the competition, we had the honour of hosting the semi-final. Having undertaken to host, it was all hands on deck for the fortnight leading up to the competition, with last minute preparations being juggled with rehearsals.
Doubling our participation from Scór Sinsir earlier in the year, we took part in four of the seven events.
First up were the Céilí Dancers of Eimear McGarry, Sinéad McGarry, Natasha Miskimmin, Úna McGarry, Orla McCrory, Méabh Martin, Rachael McCrudden and Dearbhla O’Reilly. For the number of weeks before the competition the girls had been working hard with their mentor Ciara McGarry who put in sterling work to get them ready on the night.
The work clearly paid off as the girls produced a great performance to win through to the final of the competition.
Our next competition was the Solo Singing, where Natasha Miskimmin had little time to gather her breath after an energetic performance with the Céilí Dancers. But gather it she did to belt out a fantastic rendition of The Gem of the Roe, which was met by rousing applause from the packed Halla Mór.
Natasha’s work in the run-up to the competition also stood her in good stead and she also progressed to the next round.
Hot on the heels of Natasha was Rachael McCrudden, who had a little more time to settle herself after dancing at the beginning of the evening before taking to the stage for the Recitation. Dressed as St Patrick and complete with staff and mitre, she wowed the crowd with St Patrick’s Birthday and duly booked her place in the final.
For the night’s finale, the teams filed onto the stage for the Tráth na gCeist. Our team of Sean-Paul Gibson, Patrick Mervyn and Pearse Fitzsimons, and mentored by Ciara McGarry, were immaculately dressed in white shirts and fetching red ties. We finished the first half of the quiz in a commanding position within the top three, but despite their best efforts, we finished just outside the qualification places in 4th place.
The running of the competition was a massive effort and the Cultural Committee would like to thank the many volunteers who lent a hand during the planning and implementation of the event. Many patrons praised us for the great welcome that they received and all the assistance that they were given throughout the evening. A few contributions to the Antrim website are included below:

Just a short note to congratulate all involved in the organising of the Scor competition on Fri night Lamh derag club. We were so well received and looked after while we were there. Congratulations to everyone in Lamh Dhearg who was involved in the organisation of the Scor Na Nog competition on Friday night. It was exteremly well organised and was a excellent club effort. I would also like to commend Lamh Dhearg on the way they looked after the competitors and on the fantastic hospitality shown to all those present.
