Aisling Success - 24/11/11
Thursday 17th November truly rounded off a memorable year for our minor footballers. They deservedly received the prestigious Aisling sport award for outstanding sporting achievement at the ‘Belfast Oscars” –at the glittering Aisling Awards in the Europa Hotel.
The club guests thoroughly enjoyed the ambience and atmosphere of the champagne reception. During the reception local Gaels such as Paddy Murray, Fred Heatley, Ray McIllroy and Michael Culbert came over and wished us all the best as excitement began to mount for the announcement of the awards.
UTV’S Paul Clarke confidently hosted the awards ceremony while the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny was the guest speaker. As the awards began to be announced and celebrated we began to appreciate how valued Aisling awards were to win. As the awards continued we became more anxious and yet also excitement began to intensify. The Sports award was the last award of the night and there was a huge sigh of relief and elation when Paul Clarke announced “and the winner is Lámh Dhearg’s minor footballers.”
As Russ and Terry proudly led the boys up to the stage to collect the coveted award, they experienced a rousing and tumultuous ovation to the apt backdrop of the classic Horslip track Dearg Doom and even a couple of cries of Lámh Dhearg Abu rang out around the packed ballroom.
Russ and Terry accepted the trophy from Sean Graham’s Gerard McAlea and Terry delivered an excellent and succinct acceptance speech to conclude a very enjoyable and successful evening. Yet again thanks to everyone who obviously voted early and often.

Lamh Dhearg Over 40s Triumph again! - 02/10/11Following on from last year's victory, our over 40s 7 a side team retained the Brendan Nugent Memorial Trophy at a rain swept St Teresas on Saturday 1st October. A one point victory against a strong Davitts team and a draw against a Cargin/Aldergrove select was enough to secure our spot in the final against our old nemesis St Johns. St Johns were clearly up for revenge for last years defeat and Locky Mc Curdy, Jimmy Wilson, Andy Mc Gowan, Liam Donnelly and co raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead early in the first half.
However the boys fought back to 0-3 each at half time and in the 2nd half we played our best football of the tournament winning 1-8 to 0-5. Colm Mc Cabe struck 5 excellent long range frees and Kevin Finnegan delivered the knock out blow with rasping shoot to the top corner of the net. Our squad was Terry Mc Crudden (capt), Steve Mc Fadden, Colm Mc Cabe, Gavin Brown, Eddie Fitzsimons, Micky Boyle, Kevin Finnegan and Pat Mc Cambridge. This team is maturing like a fine wine and has to be our best over 40s team ever ! Thanks also to Ogie Lynch and Frankie Wilson for their moral support!

Cardiac Screening in Casement Park - 02/09/11
South Antrim GAA Committee is hosting ‘Healthy Hearts/Healthy Lives' on Saturday 1st October 2011. Former Armagh footballers John and Tony Mc Entee have set up a company that provides a test which identifies whether a sportsperson is at risk of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).
The service is aimed towards all sports people – GAA, rugby, soccer, boxing, judo – it doesn’t matter. It is generally for the age groups between 14 and 35 years old. The primary purpose is to identify patients who are at risk of sudden death. For the cost of £35 the examination provided by the Mc Entees can spot irregularities in the heart which can otherwise go undetected.
The website http://www.healthyheartshealthylives.com/ provides more information. If any clubs, schools or individuals require hard copies of the booklet the company can post those on, just give them a postal address.
Any Club, School or individual who would wish to avail of this service must send their details to Michael Herron (secretary.south.antrim@gaa.ie) on or before Friday 17th September. DO NOT SEND MONEY.

U14 Football Blitz - 18/08/11It was a case of showers and sunshine on Saturday for the young Lamhs on the 13th august who took part in the well run Colin Neighbourhood Annual Football Blitz. The boys certainly came out of the tournament with their heads held high as this proved good fair for their preparations for the championship at the end of the month. Unlucky to be paired with Gort Na Mona in the opening game, a team top of the league above the young Lamhs. They adapted well and on a proper scoring system would have drawn with the Gorts but rules stated on the day that goals and points were both worth 1.
Tactics were reviewed by the mentors which saw Duggys revert to a sweeper keeper role and big Gerard Walker come out to the middle to swallow up all high balls. This worked a treat and saw the Lamhs go undefeated up to the semi-finals, with wins over St Uns, Sarfields and Lagmore Gaels. With Paul Dowling holding the centre and Darren Fox and Gerard Smyth ably assisted by young Ronan (the bull) Fegan and promising new addition Daniel Lyndsy sweeping behind, the rest of the teams found the Lamhs defence was hard to breach.
Their distribution of the ball was 1st class and Owen McKeown, Chris Watson, Pearse Fegan Graham Fegan and Sean Burns were well fed up front and took some great scores. St Pauls were duly dispatched in the quarterfinal, and in the semi final after a great start which saw the Lamhs go 2 nil up the boys run out of puff and some nifty soccer skills saw the Davitts peg us back and win by 3. Great credit must go out to the boys on the day for their effort, endeavours and skill playing some great football with their one twos and pass & move ethos instilled into them by their coaches. A special word of thanks must go out to Aodh Tumelty for his assistance to the mentors and to Powerwatts who supplied the mentors with coffee and to mums and dads who braved the scattered downpours to cheer these young gaels on. Lamhs abu.
