All roads led home to Lámh Dhearg clubrooms for the senior football team of 1971 as the club celebrated the 40th anniversary of the historic first win in that year. A black tie dinner held on Saturday evening 8th October was attended by 120 guests with the County chairman Jim Murray and special guest Gerry McCann from St John’s C.L.G

The 1971 panel of players honoured by the club had gathered from across the world, from Australia, England, and all parts of Ireland. It was a pleasure to see so many of the former greats of Antrim and Ulster football return to their club and celebrate with old and new friends. The team had a sprinkling of household GAA names of that time such as Antrim stars Frank Fitzsimmons, Sean McQuillan, Pat McCague, Gerard McCague, J.P O’ Kane Mickey O’ Neill, Tyrone players Jackie Duffy and Sean McElhatton, and Fermanagh star Gerry Regan. The team manager was Jimmy Finnegan also well known as coach to Dominic Savio boxing club. Jimmy sadly passed away a few years ago as had the club chairman of 1971 Hugh Grogan and selector Hughie Jordan. All three were represented by their families at the event.

The organising committee had arranged for a special commerative medal and personalised limited edition polo shirt to be presented to each player and mentor by the club chairman Barney Herron and Trustee Felix Mulligan.

Following a superb meal supervised by the club catering manager Maura Tubridy the panel were individually brought forward to relive their memories of the final. The evening was ably compared by Paul Buchanan who kept the stories and memories flowing and following the presentations Co Chairman Jim Murray complemented all concerned with the evening and mentioned that such events deserve a special place in the history of GAA clubs and the county. Gerry McCann Antrim and Ulster star speaking on behalf of the 1971 St John’s panel, reminded the Lámh Dhearg panel that St .John’s won back the senior championship the following year in 1972. He recalled the great tradition and bond between both clubs and the Lámh Dhearg chairman Barney Herron presented commerative crystal pieces to the County chairman and Gerry McCann. Bouquets of flowers were also presented to their wives.

The evening was also an occasion to celebrate and relive the special spirit of the 1971 team and for guests to receive an update on the exciting developments underway in the club in 2011. All accounts indicate that the celebrations went on well into the “wee” small hours.

The 1971 winning panel was Paddy McCann, Gerry Regan, Sam McGarry, Vincey Duffy, Jackie Duffy, Frank Fitzsimmons, Gerry McCague, J.P.O’Kane, Sean McElhatton, Mickey O’Neill, Sean McQuillan, Sean McNama, Cyril Jordan, Dominic McCann, Pat McCague, Pat McQuillan, Raymond Jordan, Gerry Bradley, Seanie Douglas, John Watters, Gerry McKenna, Seamus Agnew.
